 Deafness Forum 2010 Educational Scholarship

NOW CLOSED

Deafness Forum provides educational scholarships to facilitate the participation of people who are Deaf or people who have a hearing impairment in post secondary education.

Each Year Deafness Forum provides these scholarships to:

  • Provide financial assistance to Deaf and hearing impaired people to enhance their participation in further education
  • Increase the number of Deaf and hearing impaired students in further education
  • And in particular to increase education opportunities for Deaf and hearing impaired students from the indigenous community, regional communities and non-English speaking backgrounds.

In 2010 a scholarship will be available for support such as tuition, text materials or any other support considered necessary and approved by the Selection Panel for the Scholar(s) to successfully undertake an educational program. Typically around $1500 will be provided to any one Scholar. Support services such as interpreting, transcription typing and purchase of assistive listening devices or other services deemed the responsibility of the tertiary institution, under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, will NOT be considered under this scholarship. Scholarship recipients will receive complimentary membership of the Deafness Forum for 12 months.

The scholarships are available to students planning to undertake further education and are expressly designed to support students who are deaf or hearing impaired by contributing to ongoing costs for their tuition.

Past Scholars tell their Stories...

Adam Murdey The Deafness Forum of Australia Educational Scholarship has allowed me to get ahead of my peers by enabling me to easily purchase and obtain materials that I would have otherwise gone without. Examples of materials I have benefited from include text books; printer cartridges and printing paper, notepads and pens; folders; private tutoring and other needs associated with post graduate studies.

Hayley Shean

I am a student at the University of Wollongong studying psychology and philosophy. I hope to become a psychologist in the future, and would like to use my degree in the field of human resources, or experimental psychology. I thoroughly enjoy the psychological concepts I learn about, but most of the time I find it challenging to learn in lecture halls, because of my hearing impairment, which reduces my hearing by around 60%.

The 2004 Deafness Forum educational scholarship has helped me to overcome many challenges in regard to my hearing loss. The scholarship has given me enough funds to purchase everything I need to make uni life easier for me, these things being anything from costs for photocopying journal articles to exercise books to textbooks and computer software.

Attempt to live by my favorite phrase- When fate shuts a door come in through the window.
